Didi Gregorius WBC Injury Fallout

will miss the first month of the New York Yankees 2017 season and may not return until sometime in May due to a strained shoulder muscle he experienced while playing in the WBC for the Netherlands. Didi Gregorius WBC injury will force some changes in the Yankees Opening Day lineup.

The plan is for the Yankees to use Ronald Torreyes in his place at shortstop and possibly move Starlin Castro over and try out some other options at second base. They may also try Tyler Wade who as of now is slated for Scranton but he may need more evaluation first.

Bringing up Gleyber Torres is not an option seeing how he has never played above single A and the Yankees do not want to rush his development no matter how well he did in Arizona Fall Ball in October 2016 or is doing in spring training now.

This is the second time the Yankees have lost a player to significant injury during the WBC; they lost Mark Teixeira to a wrist injury in 2013.

Didi Gregorius WBC injury is just another example that the WBC simply needs to end. At least the involvement of current MLB players needs to end. If MLB wants to use it to showcase young, non-MLB roster players, so be it, but to put key players from all MLB rosters at injury risk for non-MLB teams, has always been and will always be and bad decision.

Would Didi have hurt his shoulder playing for the Yankees in Tampa in normal Spring Training activities? Maybe. However, most MLB teams slowly work these players into regular game shape and playing time and the WBC forces this issue.

Didi was one of the best players on the Yankees in 2016 and is a key factor in going forward for them in the future. Here’s hoping he is able to recover quickly and return to the player the Yankees need him to be.
