The most watched ankle in New York looks like it may need the help of doctors to repair it. Greg Bird has been sidelined for what seems like the whole season with an ankle issue. Some had even questioned his toughness and mental makeup to play in New York. Those people forgot how he flourished in 2015. T is not a stage issue and it never has been. Now the proof appears to be upon us. It has been a foundation issue all along. The foundation might require repair. So a Greg Bird surgery is possible.
Bird has a condition called os trigonum syndrome. What is that? Well, os trigonum is an extra bone that sometimes develops behind the ankle bone. It is present at birth but a small number of people have the bone not fuse into the ankle bone creating a condition called os trigonum syndrome. It is a very painful condition that is often trigger by another injury like an ankle sprain. Rest, ice, and injections are often used to treat the condition for most but for some (like elite athletes) it could mean something else. That is why Greg Bird surgery is possible.
Bird is going for a second opinion but if he goes under the knife and has the os trigonum removed it could sideline him for at least a couple months. This should be a no brainer. If they truly have a diagnosis that can help the youngster than why go with injections or ice when it is a condition that will come back again. It is better to chalk up the year, let him heal, and see what happens in the future.
Let’s be smart about this New York. What will you get out of him this year? A month? Is it worth a whole career? Just let Bird get surgery, heal, and return next season and stake his place as the First Baseman of the future for the Bombers.
