There was a point when I believed Didi Gregorius is merely the middle man between Derek Jeter and Jorge Mateo. But the rise of Gleyber Torres changed my opinion. I am not alone since the Yankees are now positioning Mateo at second base.
Defensively he has impressive range to both sides but only an average arm. Arm strength is another reason for the shift to second base. That being said, he is smart and uses his range to get in the optimum throwing position every time.
At the plate he is still way to aggressive and is susceptible to the off-speed pitch. That will come with time as he develops into a gap hitter. His speed is off the charts as evident by his 82 steals last year. Make no mistake about it, he has elite speed even compared to current players in MLB. He is still learning how to read pitchers and when he does he will be almost impossible to stop. He has the potential to be an All-Star for years at the position while contributing up the middle and at the top of the order. The ceiling is very high on Mateo if he continues to develop. With Castro at second currently, the Yankees can give Mateo the time he needs.
