Roger Marris’ 61 Breaks Babe Ruth Home Run Record

Yankee Stadium EntrywayMickey Mantle and Roger Marris were head-to-head chasing the single-season home run title in what could be called the greatest single season home run battle in the history of baseball up to that time. As the year progressed, everyone realized this was also turning into a battle for the all-time single season home run record, ironically held by all-time New York Yankee great Babe Ruth.

The battle took its tole, both emotionally and physically, on Marris throughout the season. Fans felt Mantle should be the one to beat Babe Ruth since he was their fan favorite. In fact some when as far as to say that the title belonged to Mantle. Despite the hardships and challenges, Marris prevailed.

The only knock on the day would have to be the call by Red Barber, that you can here in the video. He focused on the $5,000 a fan would win and on such a historic moment, he really dropped the ball whether it was for personal reasons or just “phoning it in.” Iconic moments deserve more.
